Hi. Welcome, and thank you for picking this up.
I wrote this book for the readers who like their romance with teeth — the ones who don't need the leads to be good, only honest. Mara and Rafe are not good people. They do bad things and they pay for them, and I tried very hard to make sure the payment stayed equal, because a story about two people destroying each other for love is only interesting if it costs them both the same.
A few housekeeping things, said plainly, because I'd rather over-prepare you than blindside you:
Every character in this book is an adult. Mara is 31, Rafe is 33. Nothing in here involves minors in any romantic or sexual context, ever.
They are foster siblings. They are not related by blood. They were raised in the same house as children, with no romantic or sexual dynamic between them before adulthood. The relationship in this book begins only when they are grown, only when it is their choice, and only when neither is trapped, impaired, or dependent on the other. That distinction matters to me and I'd ask you not to flatten it.
Everyone who has sex in this book consents to it. It's rough. It's complicated. It's not coerced. There's a difference, and this book lives on that line.
This is a dark romance, not a fantasy of harm. The bad things are depicted as bad. The villain is a villain. No one gets redeemed by love, and no crime gets washed clean by a kiss. If you're looking for a "he was cruel but he loved her and that fixed it" arc, this isn't that book, and I'm not sorry.
This is a scarred happily-ever-after. It is hard-won, it happens after accountability, and it does not come with a clean slate. If you need your comfort reads to end soft and spotless, put this down. Genuinely — no hard feelings.
If you stay: buckle in. I promise they earn it.

What This Story Is Not About
Because people will ask, and because I'd rather be clear than clever:
It is not incest. Mara and Rafe share no blood. The relationship begins in adulthood. This is a chosen-taboo story about shame and desire, not a blood-relation story.
It is not about minors. No character under 18 is placed in a romantic or sexual situation at any point. Full stop.
It is not a defense of the abuser. Silas Venn is not misunderstood, not secretly loving, not redeemable. He is the harm. The book never asks you to forgive him.
It is not "forbidden love makes abuse okay." The wrongness costs them. Every time. That's the whole engine.
It is not a redemption-by-romance story. Love does not erase the crimes. They face consequences first, and come together after.
It is not glorifying any real-world harm. It's a dark fiction about two adults consenting to something the world won't forgive — and then owning it.
It is not a rape fantasy. Everything between the leads is consensual. Non-consent is never romanticized as the leads' relationship; where threat exists, it belongs to the villains and is treated as a violation.
It is not for minors. 18+ only. If you are under 18, please come back when you're not.
Reader's Compact
You are about to spend twenty-two chapters with two people who make terrible choices for understandable reasons. I won't ask you to approve of them. I'll only ask you to believe them.
If you're still here — thank you. Turn the page.
